When was LP Field™ built?

The Titans and Nashville’s fans broke ground on LP Field in 1997, the year the Houston Oilers moved north. Construction proceeded on time, despite being hit by a tornado on April 16, 1998. Several cranes were destroyed on a day that 10 tornados touched down near Nashville, yet LP Field (then named Adelphia Coliseum) opened on time August 27, 1999 for a preseason game between the Titans and the Atlanta Falcons.

What year did the Titans move to Tennessee?

The Houston Oilers moved from Texas to Tennessee in 1997. On Dec. 22, 1999, owner K.S. "Bud" Adams, Jr., unveiled the new Tennessee Titans logo and colors, featuring the fire of the Titans and exemplifying power, strength, knowledge and excellence. "I feel we have developed a logo that fans throughout the state of Tennessee and around the country will embrace for years to come," Adams said.

What type of grass is used at LP Field?

LP Field Head Groundskeeper Terry Porch uses #419 Bermuda, which is a readily available, super durable grass. After every game, he and his five-man crew fill all the cleat divots with a sand/seed mixture to promote re-growth. During the early part of the season, he gets raves from players about how much cooler the natural grass field is compared to turf, which can often be 30-40 degrees warmer than the air. Later in the season, when frosts arrive, most grass simply won’t grow. To keep the field in playable condition in November and December, the groundskeepers will reseed with rye grass, use warming blankets and tarps, and re-sod with grass brought north from Florida.
